On Thursday, May 29, 2025, at approximately 12:29 AM, I, Officer Richard Lavey III, was working in car West 6 when I was dispatched to Statue Park in Davis Square for the report of a dispute where one party had a knife and scissors. I was on another call at the time this call came in so I arrived slightly after Officers Dell'Isola, Ruf, Bitencourt, and Martins who responded as backup. Officer Sergio Garcia also responded as backup once he cleared the call he was on, and Officer Sergio Costa responded to transport one party from the scene to the Police Department.

Upon arrival, I saw three parties separated from each other and speaking to officers. The first party is a man known to me as XXXX. The second party is a woman later identified as Ann PUTNAM. The third party is a witness who would only identify himself as XXXX. I spoke to XXXX first who was speaking to Officer Bitencourt at the time of my arrival. XXXX stated PUTNAM started yelling at him to leave a few hours ago but after she yelled at him for a little while, she left. XXXX stated when PUTNAM came back she lunged at him with a knife, at this point XXXX grabbed the wrist of PUTNAM to prevent her from stabbing him and he called 9-1-1 while attempting to disarm her.

While speaking to XXXX, he stated he heard yelling from around the corner so he ran to see what was going on. Once he could see XXXX and PUTNAM, he stated XXXX had PUTNAM by the wrist and PUTNAM had a knife and scissors in her hand. XXXX was concerned about having his name or statements in a police report so he would only identify himself as XXXX but stated he frequents Davis Square and would be willing to attest to how officers treated PUTNAM. XXXX stated officers were very patient and professional with PUTNAM. XXXX also raised concern for PUTNAM, believing she may have mental health issues because of her behavior.

While speaking to PUTNAM, she stated XXXX approached her and took a knife out of the sleeve of her jacket. When asked how XXXX would have known there was a knife in the sleeve of her jacket, she said the tip must have been exposed at the end of her sleeve. When asked what happened before XXXX approached her she stated nothing happened. I asked her if there was any argument or any other reason for the physical altercation and PUTNAM stated nothing happened again. I repeated back to her "nothing happened before the altercation?" and she stated "oh I remember, I asked him for a light for my cigarette." So I reiterated that she asked XXXX for a light for her cigarette and this prompted XXXX to grab her wrist and take the knife out of it and PUTNAM agreed this was an accurate account of what had transpired. PUTNAM, unprompted, stated she drank two glasses of wine earlier in the night.

PUTNAM regularly used XXXX first name, so I asked if she knew him prior to this incident. She stated she did not know him prior to this incident. Later on while speaking to PUTNAM, she stated she heard about XXXX so I asked her what she had heard about him, she stated she heard he was dangerous. I asked XXXX if he had met PUTNAM prior to tonight and he stated he believes she took some of his items a few weeks ago but was not very familiar with her.

No parties reported any injuries nor did they want medical attention. A knife with a string tied to a pair of scissors will be logged into evidence. Another man in the area during the investigation but not during the altercation requested to go to the hospital for reasons unrelated to this call. PUTNAM was transported to the Somerville Police Station by Unit 200 operated by Officer Costa. PUTNAM was searched at the station by Officer Prophete and booked by Lt. Shackelford. It was also discovered PUTNAM had two outstanding warrants, docket numbers 2501CR002368 and 2508CR00308. I arrested PUTNAM for assault with a dangerous weapon by means of a knife and scissors under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 265 Section 15B. A citation will also be issued to PUTNAM for carrying a knife in excess of of 2.5 inches under Somerville Code of Ordinances 9-96 (Citation #504825). PUTNAM was also reported missing to the Boston Police Department on May 25, 2025, a locate was sent to the Boston Police Department. PUTNAM referred to herself as homeless several time but also said she was from New Hampshire and was able to provide a New Hampshire address, so this address will be used for court paperwork.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Richard Lavey III #365
