1 count SHOPLIFTING BY ASPORTATION

On Tuesday, July 8th, 2025 at approximately 3:45 p.m., I, Officer Campers (East 2) along with Officer Ribeiro (East 4) responded to Target (180 Somerville Avenue) for a report of a female shoplifter that was being detained in the loss prevention office.

Upon our arrival, we were met with the reporting party and asset protection officer, Ms. XXXX. XXXX stated that she had stopped a female at the exit doors to the store after she walked out without paying for numerous items. I observed the female suspect who identified herself as " XXXX " and provided an address of XXXX. I asked " XXXX " for any type of identification, but she stated she did not have anything. I informed " XXXX " that if I could not positively identity her that I would be arresting her for shoplifting.

She continued explaining that she was foreign exchange student and had been studying in the United States for approximately a year. I then said to " XXXX " that she surely must have a student visa, passport, or school ID with her name on it, but again she stated she did not. I then asked " XXXX " if she had a picture on her phone of any of these items or something that could at least identify her but again she said she did not. Officer Ribeiro then asked " XXXX " if there were any ID's at her residence and if anyone there could provide her with a picture of those items and she said there was not.

Officer Ribeiro then told " XXXX " remove her purse from her shoulder so that we could check to see if there were any other stolen items. " XXXX " clutched on to her purse and refused to hand it over to Officer Ribeiro. I then informed " XXXX " that we needed to check her purse and she reluctantly handed it over. Officer Ribeiro found one additional stolen item inside her purse and a small wallet with multiple forms of identification including a national ID Card from Peru, a drivers license from Peru, and a Tufts University ID card all with the name CLAUDIA LY HUAMAN. I then asked her if this was her real name and she replied yes. I then had LY HUAMAN stand up and told her she was under arrest and handcuffed her. She pleaded with officers to give her a second chance and that she would be truthful. I explained to LY HUAMAN that I provided her with ample opportunities to be honest and she continued to lie and be evasive towards officers.

Officer Khoury arrived in marked wagon #200 and transported LY HUAMAN to Somerville Police Headquarters where she was booked in the usual manner by Lt. Holland for the violation of the following:

M.G.L c266 s30A- Shoplifting by Asportation

XXXX was able to provide me with an itemized receipt of the items taken which totaled $447.12. I will attach a copy of the receipt to this report.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Cassandra G. Campers, #314
