On Friday, July 25, 2025, I, Officer Antoine along with Officer Campers were assigned to East 3 on the 1600-0000 shift. At approximately 5:17 p.m., Officer Ruf (East 1) and Officer Morel (East 4) were dispatched to 125 Broadway for a check condition. The reporting party stated there was a Hispanic female wearing black top and grey sweat pants swinging what appeared to be a pipe. Officer Campers and I also responded.
Upon our arrival, Officer Ruf informed other officers responding that he had a female matching the description, stopped at the corner of Minnesota Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. The female is very well known to officers and was immediately identified as Ms. XXXX. On the sidewalk beside XXXX was a metal cane, which was now broken in half.
Officer Campers and I then asked XXXX to explain to us what had happened. XXXX stated she was in front of 102 Broadway (Gauchao Restaurant) speaking with a male party. She said that this male was her friend, but could not provide us with his name. She described him as Hispanic male, approximately 5'5", with a ponytail, wearing a hat and sunglasses.
She stated that the male asked her to have sex with him and when she told him no, he became angry and picked up a metal cane and hit her over the head with it (right side). She then grabbed the cane and began chasing him on Broadway, down Michigan Avenue towards Pennsylvania Avenue. The male was able to outrun her and by the time officers arrived on scene she was by herself.
When officers asked XXXX who the cane belonged to she said it was her friend "Karaoke's" and began to describe a male party that Officer Campers knew to be Mr. XXXX. She said she had asked XXXX to borrow his cane because she needed to go to the store and was having trouble walking. XXXX allowed her to borrow his cane.
Officers were able to locate XXXX in front of 140 Broadway and spoke with him. He told us that XXXX had asked to borrow his cane to go to the store. A few moments later he could hear yelling and saw XXXX chasing CANALES with the cane on Broadway. He informed us that XXXX and CANALES are always fighting and have a tumultuous relationship. The description he provided of the suspect was similar to XXXX.
Officers then began searching the area for the suspect. Officer Morel was told by a passerby known to police as Mr. XXXX, that the suspect went inside 149 Broadway (Connexion). Officer Morel spoke with an employee and gave him the description of the suspect, who confirmed that he may be inside the establishment. Officer Morel and Ruf then went inside and found the suspect and asked him to step outside with him. He began to speak to Officer Morel in Spanish and identified himself as Mr. Edwin Canales. When Officers asked him what happened with XXXX, he replied with "nothing, she's just crazy."
Officer Campers and I then went back to speak with XXXX who was now sitting in front of 137 Broadway (approximately one block away from where CANALES was standing with officers. When Officer Campers asked her if she could see the suspect from where she was sitting and she replied yes that's him, signaling to the direction of Connexion. Officer Campers and I, informed Officer Morel and Ruf to place CANALES under arrest.
CANALES was transported by Officer Buswell to the Somerville Police Headquarters in a marked wagon #200, where he was booked in the usual manner by Sgt. Berrouet and charged for the following:
M.G.L C265 S15A; ASSAULT AND BATTERY WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON
XXXX was evaluated by EMS and signed a medical refusal.
The metal cane was seized at the scene by Officer Ruf and I logged into evidence and placed it in Temporary Locker #2.
Respectfully submitted,
Officer Benjy Antoine, #381
