Narrative: About 11:54 hours on Tuesday, 09/15/2026, I, Officer DiFronzo, assigned to marked unit #187, and Officer Ramirez, assigned to marked unit 186, responded to Statue Park, located at 30 Davis Square, Somerville, for a reported injured person. Upon arrival, I was approached by the victim, XXXX, D.O.B. XXXX, who was bleeding profusely from what appeared to be a deep laceration he sustained to the left side of his head. The victim, who was visibly up and shaking with fear, stated, "The guy sitting on the bench, with the white hair, black mustache, wearing a black t-shirt and gray sweat pants, cracked me over the fucking head with a shaft of a gray steel broom." I immediately turned to Officer Ramirez and asked him to notify Somerville Dispatch and request assistance form Catalado EMS personnel. I scanned the immediate area and observed the suspect, later identifed as Samuel Valera, D.O.B. XXXX, sitting on a bench in Statue Park, surrounded by several male individuals conversing. Myself and Officer Ramirez determined that the victim's safety was paramount and we both agreed to stay with the victim until Cataldo EMS arrived on scene. At my request, Officer Ramirez maintained visual contact with the suspect while I interviewed the victim, Mr. XXXX. I asked the Mr. XXXX what happened and he stated that he recently broke up with his girlfriend, identifed as XXXX. As a result, he was devastated that she would no longer be in his life. Mr. XXXX also stated that as he attempted to enter Statue Park, he and the suspect, Valera, became involved in a heated verbal dispute regarding his ex-girlfriend and a physical altercation ensued. Mr. XXXX, further stated that as the two exchanged punches, a bottle of vodka dislodged from his back and shattered on the ground upon impact. Mr. XXXX stated that, as he retreated, Mr. Valera, retrieved a gray steel broom and struck him in the head with the shaft of the broom, knocking him to the ground. He stated that, as he attempted to regain his footing, his face was covered in blood, and he fled the area in fear of his safety. Cataldo EMS personnel arrived on scene and Mr. XXXX was subsequently transported to Cambridge City Hospital for medical assistance. Myself and Officer Ramirez then focused our attention toward the suspect, who was still sitting on the bench described by Mr. XXXX. As we approached the suspect, we identified ourselves as Somerville Police Officers, and I interviewed him. I asked Mr. Valera what had transpired between him and Mr. XXXX, and he stated, "Officer, I asked him about his girlfriend, he became enraged and pushed me, I defended myself, and the two off us exchanged punches. He started to leave and I saw him bend down and pick up something silver, I grabbed a broom and cracked him over the fucking head and split him wide open. I asked Mr. Valvera what the item was that Mr. XXXX had picked up, and he stated, "Looked like a screw driver." I then asked him if he had used it against him in any manner, and Mr. Valera stated, "He didn't have a chance, I cracked him with the broom as soon as he stood upright." I asked him what had occurred next, and he stated,"He was covered in blood and he walked away screaming." Per my request, Officer Ramirez contacted Somerville Dispatch and arranged to have the Mobile Detention Unit (200), respond to our location. I then placed the suspect, Samuel Valera under arrest for the following crimes: 1. 256/15/A/A Assault & Battery With A Dangerous Weapon to wit: steel broom c265 S15A 2. 265/13K/A Assault & Battery +60/Disabled C265 S13 Officer A. Slattery arrived on scene and transported Mr. Valera, to the Somerville Police Station where he was subsequently booked and processed by Lieutenant Kim. I would note that evidence was recovered on scene and it was logged into evidence via SAFE.
